Design One Environments began the way a lot of good things do — almost by accident. Jim Bovenzi arrived on the Monterey Peninsula in 1978 with no plan and no connections, having left Southern California behind for something smaller and slower. He started walking the coast, looking for a place to put down roots. At the time, there were only a handful of people doing interior plants in the area. Design One Environments became the first full interior landscaping company here, and nearly five decades later, it still is — one of the last of its kind.
It's a fitting origin story for a business built on instinct. Jim never set out to become a plantscaper. He was studying to become a licensed aircraft mechanic, with dreams of customizing airplane interiors, when a side job installing plants took over — and never let go. What started as a detour became a career, and eventually, a legacy.
An Eye for the Dramatic
Ask Jim what sets his work apart and he won't talk about trends. He'll talk about scale. While other companies filled a room with a handful of small, forgettable plants, Jim always went the other way — one striking, eighteen-foot palm instead of five little ones tucked in a corner. A single specimen with presence, rather than a room full of afterthoughts.
That instinct has only sharpened with time. As mature, large-format plants have become harder to source — with the best material now grown and shipped in from Hawaii rather than found locally — Jim's reputation for finding the right plant, no matter where it lives, has become part of what clients pay for. He doesn't settle for what's available. He searches until he finds the one that belongs.
Trust, Built Over Decades
Design One Environments has spent over four decades inside some of the most private spaces on the Peninsula — oceanfront estates, luxury hotels, hospitality groups, and homes with fine art on the walls and keys entrusted to very few. That kind of access isn't given lightly. It's earned, one project and one referral at a time.
Clients don't just hire Design One for a look. They hire it for the confidence that comes from working with someone who anticipates what a space needs before being asked — and who will go well out of his way to make sure it's right, down to the last detail. It's the kind of care that turns first-time clients into decades-long relationships, and it's why so many of the company's longest-standing staff have stayed for the better part of two decades themselves.
How We Work
Every project starts the same way: a conversation, not a quote. Jim walks the space in person, listens to what the client is hoping to feel, and offers ideas they hadn't considered. From there, the process moves at a deliberate pace:
Consultation — An in-person walkthrough to understand the space and the client's vision.
Design — Sourcing the right plants and containers, then presenting a proposal with real photography of what's being installed.
Installation — Delivering, placing, and finishing every detail on-site.
Ongoing Care — Flexible maintenance plans, including guaranteed care for clients who want peace of mind.
The goal, every time, is the same: a client walking into a finished space and feeling genuinely surprised by it.
Fifty Years in the Making
Design One Environments is approaching its 50th anniversary — a milestone few businesses on the Peninsula can claim. Jim credits the longevity to a philosophy he picked up early and never let go of: businesses that grow too fast rarely last, but businesses that grow steadily tend to stick around. Design One has never chased the flashiest job or the lowest price. It has simply done the work well, for the people who value that, for as long as it takes to build something real.
That patience shows in the plants themselves — the ones Jim still hunts for personally, wandering nurseries in search of something worth bringing home. It shows in the staff who've stayed for years. And it shows in a client base that keeps coming back, project after project, decade after decade.
As one longtime collaborator put it:
Design One Environments is a company you can rely on — one you feel confident in, and impressed by, every time.

They sourced a statement plant we couldn’t find anywhere else—and it transformed the entire room.
